During a visit to Mongolia, Lama Zopa Rinpoche was requested by the people of Darkhan to set up a Dharma Center in their city. Golden Light Sutra Center was then established in 2005. In 2009, the Center moved to the present rented premises and since then it has maintained a regular teaching program.
Being the first Center outside of Ulaanbaatar and now not having a resident teacher, is the cause for a different model to be developed enabling the students to further their Dharma knowledge as a study group with support from visiting teachers.
Since the beginning of the Center, a very dedicated group of students have recited the recommended pujas and prayers on the 4 main days of each month, taken the Mahayana precepts on special days, engaged in sutra recitations and more recently, have been doing group practice of prostrations to the 35 Buddhas of Confession and Vajrasattva.
In April 2020, the Centre’s status changed to that of a study group of Ganden Do Ngag Shedrup Ling in Ulaanbaatar (FPMT Mongolia). It is no longer an independent legal entity. However, visiting teachers will continue to benefit the study group and its students are welcome to continue their daily practices at home. There is hope that the study group will once again become a Center in the future.
