Vegetable Garden and Food Production
Growing and harvesting vegetables is also a new part of our work and something which has been growing over the last few years. Making use of two greenhouses and several large out-door garden areas, Lamp of the Path plants and grows vegetables and harvests fruit from the small trees and bushes which have also been added to the compound. Produce which is grown both in the greenhouse and in the outdoor gardens is used in the making of hot soup for the Soup Kitchen, for distribution to needy families and for selling locally in order to generate additional income. The type and variety of vegetables grown over the last few years has also expanded and following harvest, left over produce is canned or preserved for later distribution and use.
In addition, last year the LOP Community was gifted a special storage unit for the harvested vegetables and this serves to extend the life and use of the produce until it can be used, sold and distributed to community members and our partners.
